Mathew 4:18-22 NIV
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Rabbi is Hebrew for “MASTER TEACHER”. In the culture, during the time Jesus walked the earth it was the greatest honor to be chosen by a Rabbi.(something every parent hoped for their children) Many times Rabbis would go to schools and evaluate the students(around the ages of 14, 15) asking them questions to see if they had the potential to be a good student. Rabbis would choose disciples that they thought had what it took to be just like them. If the Rabbis believed the student had what it took, they would say “Follow me”, if not, then it was time to go home and work the family business( for example FISHING)
Today the Teacher knocks, He sees potential in you to be just like Him. “Follow ME” he says, what do you do?
In this verse above the boys left their business, left their families and followed the Rabbi.
Could you imagine fishing with your sons and then one day a Rabbi comes along and says to them “follow me”. This was an amazing moment for a Father, that a Rabbi would take notice of his sons. Of Course it's not always this way today. Sometimes the people around us are going to discourage us, and try to talk us out of following Jesus. The Culture today is drastically different however the Master Teacher still lives and the opportunity still stands. Choose this day to be His Disciple. Could you imagine Jesus wants you, the Bible says He wants you to do what He did and even greater works. My decision is made, I’m not going to let anyone talk me out of it. I am a follower of JESUS.
